Update and a blog contest!

As I wrote yesterday, there have been some personal things going on in my life as of late that had taken me away from my knitting and from blogging. I'm not going to get into them all here, but the one I do feel comfortable talking about here is the end of the boy and I.

I don't know what happened truthfully. We were doing fine, and then all of a sudden things just seemed to change once I came back from South Carolina. He seemed indifferent, withdrawn. I thought I'd give it a little more time to see if things got back to normal, but little things started happening that really had me questioning what the heck I was doing. Things just weren't adding up, I had my suspicions, and yesterday, well I learned somethings that just confirmed them.

Usually when things don't add up, there's a reason for it, so that in mind, I decided to end it.

A failed relationship is never a happy thing, but at the same time I'm surprisingly ok with all of it. I feel a lot of relief. I haven't been really happy for the past month and all that anxiety and doubt and disappointment wasn't healthy for me.

The good news is now that I don't have to worry about buying Christmas gifts for the boy, I can treat myself with a nice Christmas gift instead. And I'll be doing just that in December when a few girlfriends and I head up to Massachusetts. We've decided to go on a little road trip and a stop at Webs is on the agenda!

And now onto happier things! I saw this on Monica's blog and thought it was interesting. As a kid, I hated my first name. I was called Helena, Montana all through middle school thanks to an over zealous geography teacher as a homeroom teacher. But as I grew up, I learned to really love my name. It's kind of unique. I've never met anyone with the same name, only with variations such as Elena or Aileen. But apparently there are 31,497 people with my first name in the US. My last name is more common, with 74,992 people sharing my last name. But combined, first and last name...

8
people with my name
in the U.S.A.

How many have your name?

And I must say, at least one out of 8 of the Helena XXXXX's here in the US completely agree with Monica's opinion that knitters should be able to take extended lunch hours for trips to the LYS. :)

In more happy news, I am probably the last person to do so, but I have jumped on the Tivo bandwagon. I love Tivo. I love that I can record TV shows and not have to worry about missing my favorites, I love that it records things it thinks I will like, in fact I love checking that suggestion list. It's always a surprise to see what Tivo recorded for me.

The first thing I did once I set it up was set up some season passes, which basically just means that Tivo will record every episode of that show that airs. And that is the inspiration behind my blog contest. [I'm excited, my first blog contest. I hope at least one of you plays. It would be pretty embarrassing to have to announce there is no winner because no one wanted free yarn from me! LOL]

First up, the prize.

A half a pound of superwash fingering weight Merino wool, hand dyed by me using acid dyes. [Skein pictured on the bottom left, click to enlarge.] It's hard to tell in this picture but there is more white in this yarn then you can see here. The colorway is Daisy. I'm not sure of the exact yardage, as I have since lost the tag that came with the undyed yarn, but I know it's somewhere between 500 - 1000 yards. There's more than enough here for a pair of knee socks or a lacey shawl.

So how do you win this awesome one of a kind hand dyed yarn? All you have to do is send an email to midnightpurls AT gmail DOT com (replace the AT with @ and DOT with .) and tell me what show you think was the first one I added to my season pass list. Since I don't talk about my TV watching habits on my blog, I'll even make it easier by giving you the first five I added in no particular order. Your choices are: Dr. Who, Law & Order SVU, Alias, Battlestar Galactica, and Veronica Mars. Whoever guesses right will have their name thrown into a hat. Then my friend Lauren will pick a name out of the hat. If no one guesses right, anyone who guesses the second show I added will have their name put into the hat, and so on and so on.

Contest opens now, and will close on Tuesday, November 7th at 11:00 AM EST.

Still alive!

I'm still alive and kicking. Just haven't felt much up to blogging, or knitting due to some issues in my personal life and the insane amount of overtime I've been working lately.

The good news is that this week I should be back to my normal schedule, and the personal issues, well I'm dealing with them.

Should be some knitting content soon! I have one FO, one I haven't even blogged yet, a multi directional scarf using Noro Transitions. Pics once I find the digital camera!

Also, a blog contest to distract from the fact I've been a bad blogger, once I find the digital camera to snap a picture of the prize! I do hope you'll all play!

Review: Jo Sharp - Knit, Issue One

Over the past few weeks, I have ordered a few knitting books to add to my ever growing library. By far, my personal favorite is Jo sharp's Knit, Issue 1. I love the classic designs, and was surprised to see that except for about 5 items in Knit, I want to knit everything.

I originally bought the pattern book for the shawl collar cardigan. I have enough chocolate brown Silky Wool sitting in my stash for this, and thought the yarn and the pattern would be a great match:

Some of my other personal favorites include:

V Neck Vest:

Ribbed Raglan Sweater:

Cowl Sweater:

1950's V Neck Sweater:

All in all, I'd have to say if you're a fan of classic, timeless designs, buy this book. If you can't afford Jo Sharp Yarns, there are plenty of suitable substitutes out there. Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool works well for the Alpaca Kid Lustre, and Knitpicks Sierra seems to be the same gauge as Silkroad Ultra. (There's a great comfy looking raglan that I plan on using Sierra for out of my stash. The kind of sweater you want to wear on a cold winter day!)

The other knitting books I purchased were Yarnplay, Rowan's Denim People, A Gathering of Lace and Knitting Without Tears. Reviews of them soon!

Home!

I'm home from South Carolina. We actually got in early Saturday morning, however due to computer problems, I have not been able to post until now.

Stay tuned for plenty of pictures, knitting updates, two book reviews and more!
